"In our experience with inspecting and sampling lumber stored in wet environments, or stored outdoors in contact with soil, many species of mold will begin to colonize that are potentially allergenic, potentially toxigenic, and potential wood destroying organisms, that will continue to colonize and spread. To the untrained eye these organisms may visually appear similar to C/O-group molds but are completely different and may pose exposure risk factors.
Cladosporium is a common outdoor mold known to be one of the major causes of hay fever in the Western United States. Cladosporium spores are buoyant and spread easily. Cladosporium often colonizes wet lumber. Basidiospores are agents of wood rot and are often isolated from improperly stored lumber. Some of the potentially toxigenic genus molds that we have isolated from colonies growing on we or improperly stored lumber during the course of our investigations include Aspergillus, Penicillium, Chaetomium, and Fusarium".
